School of Engineering

Objectives

The engineering discipline sits at the center of today’s complex world, interacting with the scientific, technological, social and cultural aspects of modern society. Engineering education therefore needs to go beyond the acquisition of core skills in an engineering discipline and must include developing an understanding of the managerial, organizational and general environmental skills that are necessary for finding creative solutions and applying them efficiently.

The IIHEM School of Engineering prepares students for engineering careers through intensive five-year programs designed to develop fundamental engineering analysis skills, design know-how and engineering development and application expertise using the latest management, computational and technological methods. These fundamental skills are complemented by in-depth study of the economic, social, legal and environmental issues that need to be addressed as part of any significant engineering endeavor. Engineering graduates are able to choose either to immediately begin a professional career, or to pursue further graduate studies in a doctoral program.

As five-year programs, the IIHEM engineering curricula have a workload that is significantly greater than the standard four-year engineering program at similar international universities. Each engineering major contains a large number of courses in a “minor” area to the extent that it may be considered a double degree program in both the major and the minor areas, giving graduates the multi-disciplinary breadth of skills that are in greatest demand in today’s employment market. The curriculum is rigorous, designed to challenge the student and to encourage them to challenge themselves to achieve the goals of academic excellence and quality that have been set for the program by the Institute.

Program Majors

The School of Engineering offers three engineering programs:

Admissions

Applicants to the engineering programs must have a Baccalaureat degree in mathematical sciences or experimental sciences or an equivalent degree. They must have a satisfactory level in their scientific and language courses.

Program Description

The academic program in engineering consists of a first cycle of two years of basic education and a second three-year cycle of specialization, leading to the Five-Year degree in Engineering.

The first cycle is a common core of courses for all engineering programs that is taken in the first four semesters and that covers the following material: Basic Engineering Sciences, Computer Science and Information Systems, Management and Economics, Language and Communication.

The six semesters of the second cycle include specialized studies in the field of specialization as well as more advanced studies in computer science, economics and management. Course work in the second cycle is capped with a major senior project and complemented with obligatory professional training in national or international enterprises during the summer of the third and fourth years.

Professional Internship

During the summer of the third and fourth years, engineering students are required to do one or two-month professional internship sessions in local companies, multi-national companies or the public administration. Students submit reports on their internships which are evaluated and serve to prepare for future training sessions.
