Civil Engineering

Program Content

Civil engineers design, plan and supervise the construction and maintenance of our physical environment. This includes roads, buildings, airports, harbors, tunnels, dams, bridges, water supply and sewage systems. They must consider many factors in the design process, from the construction costs and expected lifetime of a project to government regulations and potential environmental hazards such as earthquakes. Civil engineering, considered one of the oldest engineering disciplines, encompasses many specialties. Because there are big differences in the nature of the work done by civil engineers, each civil engineer must specialize in a specific field. The major specialties are construction engineering, transportation engineering, structural engineering, environmental engineering and geotechnical engineering.

The civil engineering program at IIHEM concentrates on the fields of construction and transportation.

The Civil Engineering curriculum consists of in-depth studies in the areas of construction and transportation systems. Its courses cover:

  • fundamental foundations of civil engineering: resistance of materials, engineering structures, soil mechanics, reinforced cement, metallic construction and general construction procedures;
  • street and highway design, transportation engineering, traffic engineering and urban transport planning.

In this program, extensive use is made of modern simulation software in numerous disciplines such as properties of cement, structural analysis and transport systems.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates of the Civil Engineering Program will work as construction engineers, construction managers, structural engineers, transportation engineers and engineering cost estimators.

Graduate Education In Finance

Holders of civil engineering diplomas may wish to pursue advanced studies in specialized fields related to their fields of study. Graduate university programs permit engineers to hone their skills and acquire professional profiles that are in great demand. Many civil engineering university departments offer such graduate programs, leading to Master's and Doctoral degrees. Among the degree programs that can be pursued are the following:

  • Master of Science in Construction Engineering
  • Master of Science in Construction Management
  • Master of Science in Transportation Engineering
  • Master of Science in Structural Engineering
  • Master of Science in Civil Engineering
  • Master of Science in Environmental Engineering

Most of the above Master's programs also have a continuation path to a Doctoral program.
